Egyptian Goalkeeper El Hadary Sets New AFCON Record

Egyptian goalkeeper, Essam El Hadary, set a new Africa Cup of Nations record after coming off the bench to replace injured Ahmed Al Shenawy, becoming the oldest player in the competition's history.


El Hadary who is regarded as one of the best African goalkeepers of all time replaced Al Shenawy who was forced out after picking up an injury following a superb save to deny the Malians inside the 25th minute of the encounter.

The Wadi Degla safe hands who turned 44 two days ago has represented Egypt 144 times, winning the African Cup of Nations four times with his country. At the age of 44 years + 2 days, El Hadary became the oldest player in CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

He was chosen as the best goalkeeper in the 2006 African Cup of Nations, held in homeland Egypt. He was also named the best goalkeeper for the 2008 and 2010 AFCON tournaments held in Ghana and Angola respectively.

In January 2013 his agent tweeted that El-Hadary had retired from international football after being benched for a run of games. He retired as the 23rd most capped international player in history and also the player with most African Cup of Nations titles. 

But he quit retirement and returned to play against Bosnia-Herzegovina on March 5, 2014, with Egypt winning 2-0.

On June 4, 2016, El-Hadary played the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 win against Tanzania which secured Egypt's qualification for 2017 Africa Cup of Nation
