Ignatius Akpabio, a Nigerian, has won the BP Prize for presenting the best project on IT for the Oil and Gas industry at the Robert Gordon University (RGU), Aberdeen, United Kingdom.
The 23-year old postgraduate student became the envy of his fellow students when he was presented the awards at the school’s yearly award ceremony.
Speaking on the feat, the Akwa Ibom State-indigene noted he never expected to win the prize.
Expressing gratitude to his project supervisor, Dr. Iain Pirie, for his support, the elated Akpabio disclosed that he chose the project because of its growing importance to the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.
“Oil and gas being the major source of Nigeria’s GDP, which means the future of the country depends on the sector, so, I became inspire to do something that would improve on it. I’m a strong proponent of the ‘Nigeria of tomorrow’ and therefore, in every possible way, I want to contribute my own quota to the development of my country and coming from an IT background, I was motivated to use IT to develop and improve the sector,” he said.
Ignatius developed an inventory management system for an oil and gas servicing company, as part of his MSc project. With the inventory, the company was able to monitor and ensure effective management of goods to and from its warehouses and also record sales and purchases of goods, while automatically updating stock levels with each transaction.
According to Akpabio, implementing the system was very challenging, as it consists a lot of functionalities. He noted that the system was developed as a web application to authorised access from anywhere around the world. According to him, as long as one is connected to the Internet, the inventory becomes easy to us.
