Nigeria Named Second Largest Contributor To Maternal Mortality

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on yesterday, disclosed that Nigeria is the second largest contributor to the under-five and maternal mortality rate in the world.
The Director General of NEMA, Sani Sidi Muhammad, who stated this in Abuja at a programme to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction with the theme; “Live to Tell,” advocated concerted efforts to build more resilient communities.

The day was set aside by the United Nation General Assembly in 1989 to create global culture of Risk Awareness and disaster reduction.
He appealed to the public to collaborate with government to managed disaster.
He called on Nigerians and governments at all levels to participate in creating awareness to reduce the mortality rate.
“Every single day, Nigeria loses thousands of under-five olds and hundreds of women of child-bearing age. This makes the country the second largest contributor to the under-five and maternal mortality rate in the world.
“We do not have an option but to jointly accept immediate considerations of reducing mortality through appropriate risk reduction measures. This is the only way we can enhance disaster risk reduction efforts,” he stated.
According to him, this year’s theme dwells on the first target seeking to create a wave of awareness about actions that need to be taken to reduce mortality around the world.
He thus advocated an inclusive disaster risk reduction efforts as well as adequate preparedness.
“As a commitment for 2016 and as we celebrate this globally recognised day, we need to note that disaster risk reduction needs to be inclusive in all our activities, projects and programmes with budgetary allocation.
“Planning and preparedness activities need to include specific actions related to reducing mortality.
All hands need to be on deck to implement the new Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction as an effort towards.
