At least, three persons have died following renewed cult clash
between rival groups at the Calabar campus of the Cross River University
of Technology.
The cause of the renewed clash was not clear, but
it was learnt on Friday that the fight started on Monday after some
students of the institution completed their final degree examinations.
The
first victim, who was an unidentified student from the school, was
maimed and later killed by a rival group along Ekpo Abasi Street. The
street leads to the main entrance of CRUTECH.
An eyewitness,
Stanley Abutu, said the activities of the students had caused serious
tension within and outside the school environment.
He said, “The
unidentified student was maimed by a rival group at Ekpo Abasi junction
and died a few days later due to the wounds he sustained. The whole
thing started on Monday when some students shot into air on campus after
completing their examinations.
“Later that day, a student
suspected to be a member of the Klan’s Confraternity was dragged out of
the male hostel 2 at about 8:29pm by rival Baggers’ Confraternity. He
was however lucky to sustain only machete cuts before security agents
intervened.”
It was learnt that some students were arrested by the state security
intervention tagged ‘Operations Skolombo’ after the victim raised the
alarm.
The security agency also aborted an open gyration by
members of the Baggers’ Confraternity who attempted to transfer
leadership in front of the female hostel.
“The security agents
prevented the cultists from attempting to publicly transfer leadership
in front of female Hostel Three. It was aborted following the arrival of
a combined team of the ‘Operations Skolombo’ and the school’s security
team,” Abutu said.
Southern City News also learnt that another
CRUTECH student was on Wednesday shot dead close to the same Ekpo Abasi
Street at close range.
The eyewitness also disclosed that another corpse was discovered on Thursday in the school pavilion.
“It
was on Thursday morning when students coming to school through the
sports arena popularly known as Pavilion, met the corpse of a popular
student called ‘Liberty’ with gun wounds and machete cuts.
“Liberty
was said to have been pursued by his rivals from the Visual Arts
Department to Pavilion where he was shot thrice and then cut with a
machete upon discovery by his assailants that the bullets caused him no
harm,” he said.
