Residents of Amangballa village in Afikpo North Local Council of Ebonyi State woke up on Tuesday to discover the body of a 92- year-old Horri Oko Eluu dangling over a rope at the Ogo Square.
An eyewitness said that the deceased’s sons who were abashed over the abominable incident, had quickly untied their father’s dangling body and deposited it in the mortuary at Mater Miscrecordia Hospital, Afikpo.
Wondering what would have made a nonagenarian to commit suicide, inquiries revealed that he was allegedly in a contentious battle with one of his brothers over a parcel of land.
One of his sons, Okpara Oko, dismissed insinuations that the quarrel over a piece of land might have caused his father to take his life.
“Even when the matter was decided by the community, it was still in his favour. Our father had no problem. His children are all doing very well and were taking very good care of him,” he said.
He also confirmed that his father’s remains had been deposited in the mortuary.Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ebonyi State Command, DSP George Okafor said one of the sons of the deceased, Michael Ogbonnia Oko, had reported to the police that his father had hung himself.
Okafor said when the police visited the scene they saw the rope and stool used for the act.He said although investigations were stil on, there was no suspicion of foul play, adding that they were still awaiting the result of the autopsy.
