Feyenoord Beat Man United 1-0 in Europa League Match

Tonny Vilhena was the hero for Feyenoord as they began their Europa League on a bright note with a 1-0 win against English giants Manchester United.

Former Dutch international Dirk Kuyt Captained Feyenoord, Brad Jones started in goal and Nicolai Jorgensen led the line while Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho who dropped Wayne Rooney from the game benched Zlatan Ibrahimovic and gave first start of the season to Matteo Darmian and Chris Smalling.

Juan Mata was also recalled to the starting line-up after his bench role in the Manchester derby where they lost 2-1.

First half

The home side was on the front foot early on as winger Steven Berghuis produced a smart save from David de Gea. Feyenoord piled on pressure as they looked beat the English giants at home but Eric Bailly was on hand to help clear the danger whenever he was called upon.

At the other end, Manchester United won a freekick when Ander Herrera was fouled by Karim El Ahmadi. Football’s most expensive player stepped up and took it but the goalkeeper Jones produced a brilliant save.

Van der Heijden became the first player to be booked as he got a yellow card for hacking down Juan Mata. The visitors nearly took the lead when Marcus Rashford and Darmian combined to setup Anthony Martial but he blasted his shot wide from the edge of the box.

The home side had the opportunity to end the first half with the lead when Kongolo played in a superb pass into Toornstra but the forward wasted that chance as the Red Devils survived.

Second Half

The half was caged as both sides were cautious and refused to give up any loose balls. Feyenoord who have won all of the previous five league matches continued to show remarkable stamina as they frustrated Mourinho’s men.

The Portuguese was forced to make a dramatic change as he brought on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Memphis Depay and Ashley Young for Martial, Rashford and Mata.

The Sutch team manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst brought on Bilal Basacikoglu for Berghuis and it was the home side’s substitution that worked out best as they scored as Nicolai Joergensen delivered a well-timed cross into the part of Tonny Vilhena who placed his effort into the bottom corner of the net for the only goal of the game.
